Vintage Eyewear at ABnG Store

I am vintage addict. When I am traveling I  have to stop by vintage stores to look for some unique accessories or clothes to add a beautiful touch to my outfits. Vintage sunglasses have always had a special place in my heart as well.  So I was so happy to know that the vintage eye wear collector Tarek Al Sallab has launched some of his collection at ABnG store. The collection is from the 20s to 90s, you can actually find a lot of brands, which will be changed according to whatever Tarek, finds by his (haunting for vintage) trips. Tarek is the only retailler of the famous German brand CAZAL in Egypt, which was worn by many celebrities and important persons. The Cazal collection is the only one which decided to reproduce from their previous collection since the high demand.

How to know whether a vintage pair of sunglasses is authentic or a cheap replica?
At that time there was no replicas. You can know a good pair by its weight, whether or not it is handmade and the gold plated.
From where do you collect your sunglasses? I traveled to around 26 countries to find the perfect pairs, I  have a collection of about 50 thousand pair that I got from either old distributors or handpicked at the original factory.
What is the price range? Vintage pieces are cheaper than today's models. But of course some pieces can go up to 15,000 EGP like  the Cartier, and some of the silver plated can go to 7,000 EGP

Tarek believes that trends come back since everything is re-wearable. Most popular one are Cazal, Cartier and Emanuel Kahn. Emanuel Kahn pieces are entirely handmade, and you can see that the lines or curves are not precise and not perfectly straight.Tarek doesn’t believe that you should wear the shape that is trendy, its your personality that makes the look while you are wearing it.

Meet Mr.Kojak

Come on, let's meet Mohand Kojak. A super talented young man, who has taken the Cairanne fashion scene by storm recently, he is a designer and fashion photographer, and still a college student, can you imagine what will this guy do when he graduates?!

- Mohand you are a photographer, a designer and works in fashion PR, tell us how did all this come up ?
Well, photography was a hobby of mine back in the day, when I enrolled in the Applied Arts program at the GUC, I started taking intensive photography courses that enhanced my capabilities and shots perspective. As for being a designer, that’s my goal in life, I dream it, think it, and be it. I find myself doodling designs all the time, whether on random paper, or my sketchbook. One of the Fashion design courses that helped me a lot, was my intensive three months course with the amazing Deana Shaaban; it really emphasized my artistic side and enabled me to know how to create a collection that belongs to an inspiration. When it came to work in fashion PR, it happened in the most random way, when A friend of mine asked me to join as a graphic designer and photographer for the company, that’s then, but now, I’m the Head of Creative at “The PR Consultants.”

  - Did your college background helped you in this ?
Studying applied arts is really inspiring, it helped me understand different formats of design, and in the end, I’m a designer, I needed to know more about this whole thing called art platform.

 - Tell us more about your upcoming collection, and what was the inspiration behind it?
I’m working really hard on this collection, will announce soon more details.

- Is it hard to start a fashion brand in Egypt? if yes why ?
It’s hard to start a fashion brand anywhere in the world, but if you have what it takes to standout and create something that is different, yet demandable by the market, then you can launch a fashion line wherever and whenever.

 - Who do you look up to ?and what inspires you?
My mother, she’s my inspiration, my mentor, and my backbone.
 - You, yourself have a very unique sense of style, Describe it.
Bohemian, different, self-speaking and outrageously provocative.
-Are you planning to display your pieces in any boutique?
Not at the moment, probably with the big launch of the F/W15, a plan will be put for the brand by “The PR Consultants.”

 - A big problem in the local Egyptian scene is the imitation, how are you planning to handle copy cats?
Once it starts to happen, I will know that I “made it.”

Fashion Forward Day 3

The last day was the most crowded and the busiest. I started my day with Grazia emerging talent, a show celebrating Emirati young designer, whom was picked by Grazia magazine's readers. Aram’s first ever professional fashion show, was deeply inspired by Alice in wonderland and the mad hatter tea party,  she  took the inspiration into the next level, and set up a real tea table with cakes, and macaroons. Aram’s designs were very clean cut tutu skirts and dresses, midi and full length, mainly using tulle and silk with pastel colours. Although Aram was simple and predictable, but she starts grand, and I am sure she will keep it grand.
Last two shows were the ones with the longest entry queues. Saving the best for the end, FFWD always schedule Zayan the label show for the finale.  The Lebanese, Dubai based Zayan Al Ghandour is the successful lady behind the brand and behind Dubai's most famous concept multi-brands series of boutique (S*uce). The show theme was "I want a fairy tale" using the quote from Julia Robert’s character in the movie “Pretty Woman” and using the movie’s famous soundtrack as the runway’s marching music. Her collections are always on the girly, funky side. With grey sweatshirts and maxi cotton funky dresses, Zayan's signature tutu skirts, fur coats and  the borrowed  clutches from London’s top shoes and bags designer Sophia Webster, Zayan’s 10 years in fashion business have made her expert of what will sell out in few days and what won’t.
For the grand finale Amato Dubai’s great couturier, who never repeat the same design again for any reason or for anyone! The man who once dressed Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Selena Gomez, has created a dramatic impeccable collection that should have been displayed by the Opera House of Paris in a huge show at the PFW.  It can be easily described as the best and grandest show, out of all the FFWD shows. This designer’s sophisticated mix of authentic cultures, Indian, to Bedouin to African with the rich and dramatic gowns has created a collection of masterpieces, and with the difficult to describe pieces of accessory which added a further touch of sophistication to the outfits, have made audience go into a crazy endless session of applaud, and I could spot some tears of appreciation as well. Fashion Forward was as usual a plus experience for me, and for all the Middle Eastern fashion lovers. You go watch fabulous great designers, mingle with fashionable people who are coming from all around the globe, like the big blogger BraynBoy who surprised the crowds this time by his appearance, and above all this you learn, learn to appreciate cultures, different taste, and of course fashion.

And Amato:

For my outfit I wanted to wear something 100% authentic Egyptian. I was searching to get a dress from Egyptian designers, I came across Allaga, a new Egyptian brand which is a collaboration of young Egyptian fashion students, they had a fabulous collection for fall, and I like a Jalabyiah dress. You know I have always liked the traditional upper Egyptian Jalabyiahs for men, and I have always wondered if one day I could wear them. I was so lucky to find amazing people like the ones behind Allaga, who actually had the same thought as me and created such a very traditional yet trendy and casual dress, the fabric is so good, and  lightweight. I really would love to thank them as all of their collection was sold out, and when I asked them, they did one specially for me, really thanks to all the people behind Allaga, and go check the new collection now, it has just been released few days ago.

I styled the Jalabyiah dress with authentic silverware from Ruby's Silver and Tajaly. Another young talented Egyptian jewelery designer with gorgeous pieces, I picked the Tarboush and old Egyptian flag, and the Mishkahh (old Islamic lamp) as the necklace. I loved the fact that every piece of the jewelery represented an era of Egypt's history. For my bag I added another piece of Egypt's culture the Bedouin one. With Neama Al Khalek beyond amazing clutch, that clutch was a show stopper, I couldn't how many times I was stopped by the fashion shows, where I was asked where was my clutch from, and was actually picked for the best handbags by Platinum list in Dubai. Neama is a fashion designing student and has already started a line of handmade clutches, using genuine leather and authentic accessories. Go check her line here
